Festival of Trust and Love – Rakhi

Rakhi also known as Raksha Bandhan is festival which celebrates the duty and love between brothers and sisters; The festival is mainly observed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. Rakhi is mainly observed in India, Mauritius and Some parts of Nepal. It is also celebrated in other parts of the world by Hindus. There are lots of Myths and Historic legends are linked to this festival of Love. This Holy festival of love and affection has great significance in rajasthan’s History.

On Raksha Bandhan tie Rakhi(a Kind of Sacred Thread) on her brother’s wrist. This denotes the sister’s prayers and love for her father’s well-being and brother’s lifelong vow to Protect her. The festival is celebrated on Shravan Poornima ( Full Moon Day of Shravan Month of Hindu Calendar). Raksha Bandhan literally in Sanskrit Means “The Tie or Knot of Protection” and in return Brother Promise the her sister to protect and comfort her whole life.

Rakhsha Bandhan Ritual: On the day of Raksha Bandhan brothers and sister get together in the Presence of other family members. If sisters and Brothers are separated Geographically, the sister Mail the rakhi well in advance of Raksha Bandhan. Ritual starts with lighting up Dia (a Lighted Lamp) which signifies fire deity. The sister and Brother face each other and then sister Ties Rakhi on the wrist of Brother.

After Rakhi is tied on the wrist of Brother; sister says a prayer for his brother’s well being and prosperity. While doing this a Tray with Lighted lamp (Dia) is rotated around the face of Brother. After that it is custom to give gifts and cards to sister. Gifts can be anything from small to big and can be monetary or symbolic.

1. Indra Dev: As per the Hindu’s ancient script Bhavishya Puran, in the time of War between gods and Demon, Indra – deity of Sky and Rain was sent back by powerful king of demons Bali. Then Indra’s wife sachi went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu gave her a Braclet and asked her to tie it on wrist of Vishnu. Sachi tied that holy thread on Indra’s wrist, blessed with the prayers indra defeated the King Bali and regained what he had lost.

2. King Bali and Godess laxmi : According to BHagwat Puran and Vishnu Puran when god Vishnu won the three world from Bali he was asked by Bali to live in his Palace which God Vishnu accepted it. But Godess Laxmi wife of lord Vishnu didn’t liked and then tied rakhi on wrist of Bali and made him brother. Bali asked for the gift and she asked to free Lord Vishnu from his request which he happily accepted and as well as accepted Laxmi as his sister.

As per Rajasthan’s tradition, all the festivals in Rajasthan are celebrated with great enthusiasm. Rakhi festival in rajasthan is also celebrated with a difference. There are Fairs also organized by jaipur Cultural Society on the day of Rakhi. One of the Holy Festival of rajasthan has its own significance in the history of rajasthan. According to story “Rani Karnavati, who was the widow of King of Chittor, sent the holy thread Rakhi to Emperor Humayun when she felt that there was no hope of defending the kingdom of Chittor from the attack of Emperor of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah. Emperor Humayun accepted the Rakhi and started with his troops to defend her but before he reached Chittor, the chittor was defeated. Queen Karnavati committed suicide with a large number of women by consuming poison.” This festival of Rajasthan is celebrated with great Joy, brotherhood and passion by sisters and Brothers all over the world.
